N Scale SD60E Norfolk Southern #6952
The SD-60 was designed to be used in heavy drag fright or medium duty freight service. They were promoted as replacements for SD40 and SD40-2 locomotives. The first production units were built in 1984 for Norfolk Southern. Production totaled 537 standard cab units by the time production ended in 1995. While the SD60 proved to be more reliable and fuel-efficient than the SD50, but it was not a resounding success in terms of regaining the market share that was lost due to the electrical and mechanical issues that plagued the earlier SD50.
Physically the SD-60 varied little from its predecessor visually, the main changes taking place internally with the aging 645F engine being replaced by the new 710G. The two locomotives can be distinguished by the door panels; the SD-50 featured four latched doors in six door panels whereas the SD-60 has six latched doors in eight door panels.
Atlas's N Scale SD60's have been reproduced in a number of road names and configurations. They include a number of great features and include magnetic knuckle couplers and lighting.
